The Headache Institute at Narayana Health offers the first comprehensive headache neurology fellowship program in India. The Headache Fellowship is tailored to enhance the knowledge, attitude and practice of clinicians who wish to pursue a career in Headache Medicine. Our aim is to create well informed, adept, and passionate Headache Specialists who will be groomed to practice the science and art of headache medicine confidently in clinical settings. Fellows will be expected to pass the World Headache Society Headache (WHS) Certification examination for successful completion of the training program and will be also be honored with the title Fellow of the World Headache Society (FWHS).

The NH Institute of Neurosciences is one of the largest neurology programs in the India with 44 neurologists and 37 neurosurgeons across the state borders. The Bangalore hospitals is home to 11 board-certified neurology specialists and subspecialists in stroke, cognitive neurology, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuro-otology and neurophysiology and 6 neurosurgeons. All faculty take an active role in teaching neurology and subspecialty programs.

The clinical fellowship is of 1 year in length of which 1 month is clinical training be based out of Narayana Health City, Bangalore, the remaining 11 months training  will be online. Successful completion of the course includes passing the exit exam and thesis defense. 

Our Fellowship will encompass both outpatient and inpatient management of headache and facial pain disorders, and focus on a interdisciplinary and holistic approach to treatment. The Fellows doing the hospital-based training will have significant autonomy in decision making and be actively encouraged to devise a management strategy in complex headache disorders. The World Headache Society multi-axial classification of head, neck and face pains (WHS-MCH1) application as a clinical aid would be emphasized at each patient encounter. The importance of a generalist approach with a specialist’s expertise is part of the program philosophy.

As a fellow, you will see headache patients at the NH Headache Clinics in Bangalore. Each day you will work with the faculty to be involved in delivering direct care to a diverse patient population referred from the regional, national, and international base of Narayana Health. You will do video consultations as well. An efficient EMR system will support you to have many details about your patient encounter and extract data. You will have ample opportunity to develop proficiency in performing a variety of outpatient procedures including Greater occipital, lesser occipital, third occipital, nerve block, Onabotulinum Toxin A (BOTOX), CGRP Monoclonal antibody, other peripheral nerve blocks- supratrochlear, infratrochlear, mental, auriculotemporal, greater auricular, Sphenopalatine ganglion block, non-invasive Neuromodulation, Infusion therapies, non-pharmacological therapies Yoga and mindfulness, Nutrition and nutraceuticals in headache management and in-patient care. For management of complex or comorbid headache disorders in the inpatient and emergency setting, you will provide inpatient consultation and work with the NH Neurology team. Opportunities exist for elective time in neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology, pediatrics, and neurosurgical specialties.

Upon completion of the program, the Fellows will be expected to be proficient in the following areas, which are delivered as modular learning. Each module consists of 2 lectures over 2 weeks and they are followed by a short quiz, the marks of which are counted for final assessment at the end of the course.

Formal didactics take place every Saturday. These include a set of core lectures that are presented by the faculty, important topics related to headache presented by guest speakers, and journal club presented by fellows and neurology residents. In addition, there is a weekly, multi-disciplinary case conference and headache neuroradiology conference. Fellows are also expected to attend and present at neurology grand rounds.

Fellows will attend headache council meetings that represent multiple disciplines that intersect with headache neurology, including general practice, internal medicine, psychiatry, neuroradiology, ENT, women’s health, pain management, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, critical care, otolaryngology, neuro-otology, neurosurgery, integrative medicine, nutrition, physical medicine, nursing and physician assistants.

The Fellow will to how to devise, build, execute, and write up a research project. You will have the opportunity to work with our faculty in systematic reviews. We invite our fellows to co-author one or more review articles, book chapters or scientific papers during fellowship.

Fellows are strongly encouraged to attend regional, national, and international conferences which open exciting opportunities, networking and forging collaborations. Headache specialists from across the world attend the following meetings.

Eligibility and application process

Applicants must have completed a postgraduate residency program accredited by the National Medical Commission in any of the following disciplines: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery. Note: International Medical Graduates are welcome to apply if they are legally permitted to practice the respective specialty in India. The Academic team will assist the candidate in this process.

Fellowship for Indian Trainees

  1. Selection of candidates for fellowship programme by sponsoring authority and final interview by subject experts(s) from Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bangalore.
  2. Training center: Narayana Heath City, Bommasandra, Bangalore (a unit of Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd)
  3. Duration of training: 12-months
  4. Course fee to NH:  Rs 15,000 to Narayana Health City; shall be paid by the candidate through Demand Draft in favour of “Narayana Hrudayalaya Ltd” Payable at Bangalore or NEFT transfer account details.

  6. No STIPEND will be paid for the trainees from Narayana Health City
  7. Log-book verification will be done by the Academic Director periodically
  8. Medical indemnity insurance is mandatory during your training period; failure to submit before 3-months from the date of joining; the trainee will terminate from the course.
  9. Attendance to clinical and academic sessions is mandatory. Biometric attendance using fingerprint must be utilized both for reporting for duty and signing off. Clinical responsibility will include night ‘on-call’ dictated by the needs of the department and the hospital. Unauthorized absence will be viewed seriously.
  10. Compliance with medical record policy is mandatory. Medication drugs must be written in capital letters with clear mention of dose, frequency, duration, etc.
  11. The candidate must not be suffering from chronic illness and is medically certified to be fit.
  12. Fellowship trainees can avail a maximum of 12 days of leave in a year excluding regular duty off/ Gazetted holidays as per hospital/institute calendar/policy.); Other than above mentioned any extra leave carried will lead to extension of the course period.
  13. Minimum duration of fellowship training provided by Narayana Health City, Bangalore is 12-months.
  14. Training and evaluation will be as per Narayana Health City guidelines; successfully completion of training, candidates will be provided “CERTIFICATE OF FELLOWSHIP COMPLETION”

Fellowship for International Trainees

  1. Selection of candidates for fellowship programme by sponsoring authority and final interview by subject experts(s) from Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bangalore.
  2. The candidate must be sufficiently fluent in English (spoken and written)
  3. No STIPEND will be paid for the trainees from Narayana Health City
  4. Selected candidates must comply with Medical Council of India (MCI) now called as National Medical Commission (NMC) requirements for temporary registration for fellowship training in India

    • Cost for temporarily permission registration by candidates / sponsor 5000 + 18% GST = 5900/- payment trough NEFT on completion of temporarily registration

  8. On arrival to Narayana Hrudayalaya, the trainees must be registered under FRRO office; Narayana Health City, Bangalore will facilitate this for trainees
